OUR NEW GREENS:
In September we were able to return to our club and play on the new carpet greens. The general consensus of acceptance is very good. After Pelican Waters and Maroochy Beach generously offered their greens to us while ours were being installed, it was a welcome change to find the kinder carpet to play on. It’s onwards and from here!
COACHING AND DRILLS:
We will be conducting coaching and drill sessions with Neeta and Carole. If you want to improve your game you will find these disciplines invaluable. All club members welcome. Check for times.
WEBSITE:
Brian Swan (Swanny) It’s wonderful to have a tech head in our midst. You’re not only showing your talent as a bowler (not to shabby on the golf course as well) also what an asset you are in many other ways. To those of you who aren't aware, Swanny is responsible for our new website now up and running.www.thewavesbowlsclubcaloundra.com.au
SCROUNGERS:
Monday afternoons you can have a go at scroungers a t4pm. Register with Silky by 3.30pm. It’s a great discipline and fantastic for your draw bowls
FROM THE MEN’S CLUB:
Brian Barret and Don Benson each received Patriarch awards to recognize their respective 90th Birthdays. I wonder how many of us will make it??? I believe Tweed Bowls Club has a championship for over 90’s.
DRESS CODE:
Gentlemen are required to wear a collared polo shirt on Wednesday for Men’s Triples.
All competition days must be club uniform.
DUMPERS:
If you are having a problem with your delivery, the club will be acquiring a couple of bowling arms for members to try. See coaches for details.
INFORMATION:
Members are required to fill in a current form of consent with up to date contact information. Forms available at the Bowls desk.
Men's Fours Champions: Roger Hayes, Sam Walton, Rob Dickenson, Ed Boxall.
Runners Up: Scott and Craig Mackenzie, Graeme Chant sub for Des Shaw and Peter Johnson.
The quality of bowls played in the semi finals and final of these matches was top class standard. Also our two juniors, Oscar and Harry were in a team that made it to the last four.
Big thank you to Les Chillcott and Nelson Thomas for playing with and encouraging our future stars. Going great guns boys. Congratulations to all who participated
Roger, Sam, Rob and Ed enjoying their victory!
$1 donation is required for a wrong bias and all money is donated to charity. Please report offenders. I believe Barry Roberts is leading the donations so far. He decided to emphasize the bias with white paint dots but that only increased the number sent down the wrong way. The little ring goes on the inside Barry!
BAREFOOT BOWLERS:
November sees the return of barefoot bowls. Thank you to Peter and Chris Childs for all the nights you supervised this. We’ll all miss you when you go. Volunteers are needed to assist with these nights. The Club employees will put out the bowls and put them away. We only need supervisors!
If you can help in any way please contact Greg Burrows. The more volunteers the less times for everyone concerned. Please consider helping as it’s income for our Club. These nights are a lot of fun and have also attracted new bowlers to join our club. Please keep in mind that our Covid plan must be adhered to. Also dumping of bowls must be controlled. 62 bowlers attended 20th November including Coast Guard, Private birthday party and holiday makers.
On Sunday 22nd November the Rollers undertook a bus trip to Red Hill. 40 of our best attended and came home with a win. I believe only 1 rink were defeated. A bit of a Curley situation. Only 2 stops required on the journey home. Must have been dying for a coffee???? As always a great day was enjoyed by everyone.

Mapleton Xmas Cake Day – You have to get in early to participate in this yearly event. The most delicious Xmas cakes handmade by the members are the spoils of the day. Our team of Ned Fewkes, Lainie Johnson, Peter Johnson and Carole McDonald came away with the Runners up. Sorry Peter I didn’t realize that a lady had to skip. I must confess you were our star player. A nightmare drive home down the range through the storm. I believe Mapleton had the highest rainfall that day. It literally bucketed down!!
Kawana Fiesta Another lovely day on the green, although heavy going, we had three good wins and one belting. However we managed to claim 4th prize of $400. Not too shabby for a day out. Thank you Carol Burrows, (Eleanor Watters—STAR PLAYER) and Fay Whittaker for playing with me. The winners Ester Regan, Maria Rigby, Leigh Fortington and Janet Healy were unbeatable on the day. Congratulations to all. .
Presidents day - Club Maroochy On Tuesday 24th November, BCIB Insurance along with Club Maroochy, held their annual Presidents Invitation Day. Each Club in the District sends a team to compete. Waves Caloundra sent a Ladies team with Neeta Chant, Carole McDonald, Anne Hawkins and Mary Needham, and a Men’s team consisting of, John Leonard, Alan Johnson, Barry Roberts with Skip Peter Johnson. BOTH teams came away with the trophies. The Ladies winning back to back titles. The presentation was made by the Legend himself, Queensland manager for BCIB Insurance and World champion bowler, Kelvin Kerkow. Awesome result for our Club.

Player Profile-Andrina Naish
Born in Glascow Scotland and then lived in New Zealand before moving to Australia, Andi has survived 2 husbands (both passed away from cancer) and 2 cats Zorro and Cindy. Many times Andi had to sacrifice playing with us because her “Cindy” wasn’t well. Understandably as she lived to an exceptional age of 20 years.
Andi took up lawn bowls in 2006 after tiring of the hot weather playing golf. A much loved member of our Club, Andi has added many District and Club championships to her list of achievements. In one year she won the Singles Pairs and Fours at Caloundra. Andi enjoys the Challenge of the game plus the many friends she’s made playing. Her other interests include Gardening, Walking and reading. She also enjoys a whiskey (Scotch of course) Andi is always supportive of new bowlers and her words of wisdom to them are: “GO FOR IT” Try everything. She has found the club to be so helpful to her after losing her husband in 2015. Andi told me the best day of bowls for her was meeting her idol, World Champion and Scottish International, Alex Marshall. (Pictured above) Say hi to Andi when you see her and listen for the delightful Scottish accent when she replies with a smile.
Slip! Slop! Slap!
According to Dr Watkins at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology large parts of the country are likely to see a continuation of the warmer and drier than average conditions experienced throughout Australia. “The key culprit for our current and expected conditions is one of the strongest positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events on record," Dr Watkins said. During heatwaves, it is important to be mindful and be prepared, look after your animals and yourself. If you can, avoid going out during the hottest part of the day (11am3pm). When outside, be sure to slip on a loose, bright, lightweight shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a wide-brimmed hat. Drink 2-3L of water a day and avoid dairy.
Early signs of heat stress: · rising body temperature · dry mouth and eyes · headache · shortness of breath · vomiting · absence of tears when crying. · If you are concerned for yourself or you know someone suffering with heat stress; Contact your doctor, local public health unit or Ring 000.
